Unbeaten and Winless
by Dennis Ranahan

The weather at the outdoor National Football League venues today is mostly calm although for the game in Paris, which kicked off at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time, could have gusty winds up to 36 miles an hour for the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers matchup.

Six weeks into the 2026 season finds the NFL with three unbeaten teams and two winless squads. There is a surprise in both categories. While the Miami Dolphins are winless, and that could be expected given the management in Miami is in a total rebuild mode and losing and therefore picking first in the draft, is a positive at this stage of their development.

The surprise winless team is the Los Angeles Chargers. Jim Harbaugh’s team has been to the playoffs in both his years at the Chargers helm, but they won’t be this season. Too many moving parts for the Chargers which includes both new coaches in the all-important offensive and defensive coordinator spots.

The Kansas City Chiefs, even though they won only six games last season, are not a major surprise to be 5-0 this season. The San Francisco 49ers are the only 6-0 team, and that can be expected. The surprise out of this group is that the Minnesota Vikings have an unblemished record of 5-0.

The Vikings have done it even while their projected starting quarterback, Kyler Murray, missed a couple games while in concussion protocol. His replacement, Carson Wentz, led a win over the Green Bay Packers after replacing Murray in the first quarter of the opening game and got a victory in his Week Two start against the Chicago Bears.

While we note the success of the Vikings behind two different quarterbacks, the real key to the success of Minnesota is their lock-down defense. The Vikings have allowed the fewest points in the league this season while opponents have only scored 64 points in Minnesota’s five wins. Only one other team in the league has allowed points that aren’t triple digits, and that is the undefeated Chiefs who have surrendered 83 in their five wins.
