The National Football League could not have cherry picked a better matchup for their primetime game. Tonight, two of the best teams in the league, each with only one loss through six weeks, bump heads at Lincoln Financial Field. The matchup tonight pits the Miami Dolphins visiting the Philadelphia Eagles.
If these two teams meet again this year it will be in Super Bowl LVIII.
And both Mike McDaniels’ Dolphins and Nick Sirianni’s Eagles have the look of a champion. And they do it in very different ways.
The Dolphins strength is speed. Their offense and defense are so fast that if they were on the drag strip they would need a parachute to slow them down. The Eagles forte is excellent talent in the trenches and a punishing running game that the league is actually having discussions on how to curb. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is so effective at following his front line and getting pushed from the back for consistent yards that the league is considering outlawing the tactic.
If they do, it won’t be before the Eagles are able to exploit their strength this season.
The Dolphins high powered offense is triggered by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who so far has avoided the injuries that have blunted his recent seasons. When healthy, Tua is in a class with the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes for making big plays even after the defense seems to have a beat on his efforts.
So, who do you want in this game?
I’m asking, because despite extensive work to carve out a play on this primetime spectacle, I have been unable to find a discernible edge for either side.
The Eagles are a year ahead of the Dolphins in building a winning tradition, having won the NFC last season before dropping a close Super Bowl battle to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles are also coming off a loss, and that defeat coupled with the respect they have for the Dolphins leans their way.
But, everytime I get caught on that side of tonight’s game, the glaring strengths of the Dolphins come to light. They have already been humbled once this year, their only loss was a blowout defeat to the Buffalo Bills three weeks ago, 48-20. But, in that game, the Dolphins visited the Bills when they had a game lead over them in the AFC East standings, a strong motivator that favored Buffalo at Highmark Stadium.
Tonight, while the Eagles may pick up a little motivation from their only loss of the season suffered last week against the New York Jets, both teams come into this contest with equal records.
So, if you like the Eagles I’ll tell you why you’re right.
If you like the Dolphins, I’ll tell you why you’re right.
As for me, I don’t like to guess when I might be wrong.
