While temperatures for the Sunday outdoor National Football League games are mild across the country, rain is expected at a number of locations. On the West Coast, rain will fall in Seattle, where the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals, and Los Angeles, where the Chargers entertain the Oakland Raiders. Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Miami, where the Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals meet in a battle that could decide who gets the top pick in next spring's college draft.
In the National Football Conference five of the six playoff berths have been clinched with only the winner of the NFC East Division yet to be decided. The Cowboys can punch that ticket with a win over the Eagles today, which would put them one game up in the standings with one game to go in the regular season while owning the tie-breaker over the Eagles based on wins in both of their regular season head-to-head contests.
If the Eagles upset the Cowboys today, the game is played at their home Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, then the decision for the NFC East title will come down to next week’s games. The Cowboys host the Washington Redskins next Sunday, while the Eagles travel to New York to meet the Giants.
The AFC also has five teams assured of a playoff berth, while the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans are in a hotly contested battle for the final Wild Card slot. The Patriots won their 12th game of season yesterday over the Buffalo Bills, which win them their 11th consecutive division crown.
The American Football Conference squads headed to the postseason are the four division winners, that includes the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. They will be joined by the Buffalo Bills, who have locked in a Wild Card berth.
In recent seasons, the NFL has used the final week of the regular campaign for division games. It creates great competition such as the one that will take place next Sunday in Seattle. If the Seahawks win today over the Arizona Cardinals, coupled with last night’s victory by the San Francisco 49ers over the Los Angeles Rams, then their contest at CenturyLink Field will decide the top seed in the NFC. The loser of that game will drop to the fifth seed.
As for today, the public has checked in with their favorite plays beginning with the New Orleans Saints (-3) over the Tennessee Titans. The second most popular play among the public bettors is tonight’s game where they take the Kansas City Chiefs (-6½) over the Chicago Bears. The third most bet game of the 16th week is the Atlanta Falcons (-7½) over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
