The clocks adjust to give us an extra hour today, but this morning the NFL took away 3½ hours by having the Jacksonville Jaguars versus the Houston Texans kickoff at at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time.
Weather today is mild throughout the The National Football League game sites. We have reached the midpoint of the regular season with two undefeated teams, the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots, and two teams still looking for their first win of the season, the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals.
The season has also included a number of quarterback changes both caused by injuries and ineffective play by the regular season starters. In Denver, the Broncos check both those boxes as Joe Flacco is replaced by Brandon Allen. Flacco, who joined the Broncos this season after playing the first 11-years of his career in Baltimore, was placed on injured reserve with a bulging disc in his back.
The shelving of Flacco for the season comes after Denver both lost the game last Sunday in Indianapolis and had their quarterback criticize the Broncos coaching decisions. Denver led the Colts last week until the final minute when they failed to pick up a first down and the Colts moved into field goal range and kicked the winner as time ran out.
Flacco was agitated in the postgame locker room and vented his frustration on why the coaches weren’t more aggressive on a 3rd-and-five play with less than two minutes to go. The coaches called a run up the middle, which got nothing, and the ensuing punt led to the final play winning field goal for the Colts.
Flacco completes his first season in Denver with six touchdowns and five interceptions with a career high 65% completion percentage. He was also responsible for leading the Broncos to only two wins in his eight starts.
The Cleveland Browns provide the competition for the Broncos today and have the strong backing of most bettors, moving the opening line, which had Denver favored by a point, to Cleveland now giving four points on the spread.
The Broncos are looking for a magic similar to the quarterback switches that preceded winning runs by the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars. Allen was a sixth round draft choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars three years ago and spent time on the Los Angeles Rams roster before joining Denver this season.
Changing quarterbacks for the Broncos is a little like changing a flat tire on your car. If you are driving along and experience that rough ride caused by a flat tire, you don’t question that changing it will help. That applies here too, the switch at quarterback can’t hurt the Broncos and while the move has the majority of bettors taking the visitors in the Mile High City, we like the more likely outcome of Denver playing inspired football behind their new signal caller.
As for the public’s favorite plays of the day, the most bet game of Week Nine is the Green Bay Packers (-3½) over the Los Angeles Chargers. The second and third most bet games are the New England Patriots (-3) over Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks (-5) over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As for the Qoxhi selections, they are now posted on this site and if a Bullet Play develops in the final hour leading up to the day’s first kickoff, that game will be added to the playlist at 9:45 a.m. Pacific Time.
