I really never thought that this year I would be advising a wager on the Chicago Bears, but circumstances spell success for them today in Philadelphia. The reason I have avoided betting on, and looked for opportunities to bet against the Bears this season, is because they are in the season after winning their division which followed four last place finishes.
When a team has a breakthrough season like that, worst to first, they invariably have difficulty the following year. It is based on expectations being too high for a team not yet experienced at winning. An overrated team is most often forced to lay too many points not because of how they are playing this season, but how they did last year.
The Bears have played true to form this season, winning only three of their first seven decisions straight-up and only twice beating the point spread.
But, as the saying goes, every, what, Bear, has its day? What we have on Sunday is a perfect spot for Chicago to gain revenge on the team that ended their run last year with a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs. The Bears were in position to win their Wild Card game last January until the end; then a would-be winning field goal banged first off the upright and then the cross bar and fell without adding the winning score to the Bears narrow loss, 16-15.
That defeat began the Bears downfall that has spilled into this season.
Now, in Philadelphia, the Bears have an opportunity to hand the Eagles home fans the same kind of sting that crushed the Soldier Field crowd last January, and instead of laying too many points based on last year’s success, the Bears are getting a very advantageous point spread based on recent results.
Every Bear has its day.
Chicago’s is Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Bears will cash a revenge chip against the home standing Eagles.
This has not been the best of seasons for Philadelphia either. They were slight underdogs last week in Buffalo where they picked up only their third point spread win of the year, and evened their season mark at four wins and four losses.
The Eagles offense, behind a healthy Carson Wentz, has done a good job this year, scoring at least 20 points in all but one outing and more than 30 points four times in eight games. But the Eagles once tough defense has turned to putty this season. Philadelphia opponents have scored 199 points this year, only six teams have allowed more.
Meanwhile, despite their troubles beating the point spread this season, the Bears have allowed fewer points than only two teams, the undefeated San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots.
What that leaves us with today, is a motivated Bears team with the better defense getting a generous point spread. We get all that, which adds up to a great chance to cash a wager.
