Eight of the ten outdoor game sites in the National Football League today will have calm weather, while rain will fall on a pair of contests. Stormy weather is in the forecast for Seattle, where the Seahawks host the Baltimore Ravens, and in Washington DC, where the Redskins entertain the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.
While I routinely check the weather at all NFL game sites, I sometimes wonder what good that information is actually serving. Both teams are playing in the same conditions, how do we know which team will benefit? Today, in a real big play for us, the first Premium Top Pick of the season, the field is going to be sloppy with rain throughout the contest.
Might bad weather neutralize talent? And, if the visiting San Francisco 49ers are laying points on the spread that reflects their ability to flex their muscle, doesn’t Washington get an edge the sloppier the conditions get?
There is a viable argument from the other side, contending that a less talented team is likely to be even more inept in challenging weather conditions. If any reason makes the Redskins more inept, then the 49ers may be in for the cakewalk most bettors are expecting.
I believe the weather helps the team that is going to win for a lot of other reasons. The team that is motivated, geared to win the game no matter what the conditions, is the side that the weather will look like it is helping. Sometimes that will be a point spread favorite, in other instances, a prohibitive underdog.
The motivational hammer falls on a prohibitive favorite this week. The 49ers got the biggest win in San Francisco franchise recent memory last Sunday with their road conquest of the defending NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams. The victory pushes the Rams 2½ games back in the NFC West race, and perches the 49ers atop the division as the only undefeated team in the conference, one of only two in the NFL.
The Patriots will meet the Jets on Monday night and enter that fray with a perfect 6-0 won/loss record. The 49ers are looking for their sixth win without a defeat today, and while the weather may play a role in the outcome, if the Redskins pull the upset win, their success will be tied to a lot of other more influential factors.
While the Redskins are our best play of the season so far, the public is in direct opposition while making the San Francisco 49ers (-9½) their most bet game of the week. The next two most popular public plays for Week Seven are the Los Angeles Rams (-3) over the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans (+1½) over the Indianapolis Colts.
As for Qoxhi, our three Sunday selections are now posted on this site, and if a Bullet Play develops in the final hour leading up to the day’s first kickoff, that selection will be added to the list of recommendations at 9:45 a.m. Pacific Time.
